Home is Where the Heart is

Tomorrow we are finally leaving New Mexico. It has been almost 9 weeks, which is a measure by which teachers live. Or X and I have. I am anxious to get home and get on with my life, but I am sad and apprehensive too. It is odd, but I have gotten used to living here, to having my dad, to single parenting. And X has changed so much in the last two months. Going home isn’t going to be going back to the same life at all, not when you have a baby. A forth of his entire life has been here. So, for him, it will be hard. I have to find a job, write my resume, interview, get used to sharing a bed. Well, with Mike J We have a wedding and a birthday party to plan. It is just overwhelming. While here life stood still for just a little bit. After my dad got better and I didn’t have to care for him as much, I got to just be a mom. In a way, that was nice. I feel like X and I are closer and really bonded. Not that we didn’t before, but he was my sole companion for many days, and I have a different appreciation of him now. Now I have to get back to life—haircuts, doctor visits, dentist appointments. I am excited, so very happy to be home, but still a little sad. This feels like my home now, and we are used to how it is. There is something comforting in the known. And there is the 7 hour drive that will be more like 12 that I am dreading…

For the birds

My life is hard right now. Really hard. I cry a lot, and X cries a lot, which makes me cry more. On top of the general reasons that I am having a hard time that I really don't think is internet public information is a lot of guilt about X. I feel bad. I feel bad he isn't with his dad, that he doesn't have any consistency, that I can't put him first, that he only has one parent and that means that parent never gets a break and therefore cannot be very good. I took a year off to be a parent, and for two whole months that has been my second priority and I feel like shit (which really worries me about going back to work, but that is a whole other post). This is compounded by guilt I have about Mike not getting to see X take his first steps, or hear him laugh in the morning, or any of that. Oh god, the guilt. It is killing me. This is not the kind of parent I want to be. However, I do try to put things in perspective. Since X was born, conceived really, I have tried my best and I am quickly realizing that that is more than a lot of people give. I put my child first always (except the last two months). Even at home when I need a break, really that helps me be a better mom. Being alone with him as made me realize that to be a good mom, I need a break. Maybe that will help that guilt when I actually get a break. 24/7 single parenting is for the birds. So, I am going to spend the rest of this post giving myself a pep talk about all of the awesome things I do for X. Or at least, generally do for X.

First, and I mean this with all sincerity, I chose the best dad in the world for him. Hands down. The best husband, the best dad, the best man I know. That is a huge gift to give a child. Please, please, love the person you choose to have babies with, and honor and respect them as people, parents and spouses, or ex spouses, I guess just as people would work.
I carefully prepared myself for labor and delivery. Did it go how I wanted? No. Not one minute of it. But did I try my very best to do what was best for my child. Yes. 100%. I had a c-section and no one thinks that is good, but I tried for HOURS before I had an epi, or pitocin or considered a c-section. And, when he was in danger, I didn't falter on the decision to have one. I just did.
I took care of myself when I was pregnant. I walked, and ate healthy and gained a lot of weight and didn't worry about it. I grew a beautiful baby.
I breastfeed. And it SUCKS. And I do it anyway, even though it hurts, and is exhausting and WAY hard. I go to meetings and support groups and eat shitty food for weeks. By shitty I mean insanely limited and healthy.
We cloth diaper. It really isn't hard, and I like it, but it is still good.
We do things. Free things, money things, just things. We go outside, we play, we visit people with babies and without babies. We go out to eat, to school, whatever.
We don't watch TV at home. X has NEVER watched TV at home. Okay, that is a lie, he watched 20 minutes of The King's Speech and one episode of The Glee Project. I still think that is pretty freaken good.
We co-sleep. Same room, same bed, whatever. Is it the perceived norm? No. Is it the factual norm? Yes. Do I care? No. I LOVE sleeping with him and cannot imagine having him in another room when he is still so little.
I tell Mike when I need a break. I need to work on this one more. I usually get too strung out before I take a break, but I do it before I totally lose it, usually.
I tell him I love him when I get frustrated, and all the time other than that too. It helps me not get frustrated.
I try to use recycled, organic or used products. I totally buy cheap ass plastic shit, but I try not to, because he will get this world. And he needs it to be safe.
I research the shit out of safety stuff, like car seats.
I let him eat healthy food on his own schedule. Is it cute to spoon feed a baby? Yes. However, there is growing research about self weaning and I am all about it.
My child has never had processed baby food or formula. Ever. When my milk didn't come in I requested donated breast milk. I am so glad I knew about it.

I realize this is sort of a bitchy list of all of the shit that I do right, implying other people do it wrong. I used to think what works for a family works for them and to each their own, and on some of this stuff I still do. On other stuff, not so much. But, this is to remind me that I am not a horrible mother when I listen to my son scream for his dad, and try to remember that at least he knows his dad. And to remind me that I can do it for two more weeks, then, I get to go back and do all of that stuff on that list. And be with my husband and our son in our little corner of the world. Together.

AHHH

God, posting with a baby is way harder than I expected, especially when said baby LOVES to rip keys off the keyboard. But, haha, he is asleep in his car seat, so I am in nap jail anyway. Updates just seem so overwhelming right now. I am just so far behind and he is growing so fast. I am sad, maybe sometime I will actually be able to keep up with it. Not now. Not when he naps on me, next to me, or in the car. Not while "I need a sandwich/IV/Oxycontin/music turned on" is the soundtrack of my life. However, since I have NO social life, I am left with myself for company, and this is what I realize. I like to blog about planning stuff. Planning for a baby, a vacation, a wedding, a divorce. Not actually doing any of those things.

holy shit

I have no time for updates, but x is asleep on me so real quick:

He walks!! First step on January 1st, but really no purpose walking this week. Where is my baby? And 8.5 months is ridiculously early.

X says hi, dad, mama, umpa, and lots of babble

He likes to make noises, like mimicking the coffee grinder and vacuum

He clicks his tongue

He has three teeth, getting a 4th

He loves to play with the dishwasher, water, and doors.

He belongs outside, and wants to be there all the time.

November Recap

We left off in October in our last update. That puts me two months behind. Lets work on that. November. Crazy. We went to New Mexico to see Grandpa Don and other family. You HATE the car. HATE IT. We left in the middle of the night hoping you would sleep. Nope. It took a lot of stops, but we got a Kealty backpack from a Salvation Army for $5 that rocks. So that was good.

And, you are awake. F.

Holiday Edition from the blog slacker

I was just informed that I am a blog slacker, and alas, it is true. However, in my defense, I have the world's lightest sleeper, and the tapping of the keyboard wakes him up. I wish that was hyperbole, but it is not. Lightest sleeper is napping with daddy however, so maybe I will get to blog. Let's find out. I am WAY behind on monthly posts, thank god for photos to remind me, but since I may not have all that much time before the little dictator reappears, I am going to skip that and do a holiday edition and general comments on life.

Christmas with a baby is amazing, if and only if you have the balls to tell everyone that you don't really give a shit, it is YOUR baby and you will do what you please, and what you please is to NOT eff up the slight schedule you have and spend time at home with your baby. That is what we did. We had Christmas morning at home, in our pajamas, with out little family. And it was amazing. Then X took a nap and my mom and brother came over. And you know what, I didn't wake the baby up because they get to leave. I don't care that it was Christmas or that they had gifts. Nope. Baby sleeps. And everyone was FINE. Then Mike's parents came over and played, then left. BLISS. We did not leave our house all day. Best Christmas present ever.

Mike and I had very strick budgets for each other this year. And while it felt odd to not blow a ton of money on the man I love most in the world, I was very happy with my gifts and with the lack of debt. It was actually really nice, and I still got tons of stuff I wanted. I hope Mike feels the same, although he did buy a video game he didn't get the next day. Oh well. X was supposed to get 4 gifts: something he wants, something he needs, something he wear and something he reads. We sort of failed. He doesn't want anything, he is 7 months old. Buy we got him a Fisher-Price walking dinosaur and it is AMAZING. I was afraid it was too old for him since it is meant for a 10 month old, but it is perfect, and within the last week he has pretty much learned to walk. X took his first unassisted steps on January 1st! Holy Cow! Luckily, he has lost interest in that endeavor and continues to crawl about instead. So...that was the want. For the need we went with sippy cups and bowls, wear we did a hat and shoes and we totally slacked because I couldn't find the book we wanted. So I just got him Barnyard Dance the other day. He doesn't know. Besides, my mom got him lots of books. It was a great first Christmas.
